Are You a Bad Driver in Memphis?

Ask almost anyone who drives in Memphis, whether they’re a good driver or not, and the overwhelming response you’ll likely get is: “I’m an excellent driver”. However, auto insurance companies who do the insuring of drivers and car owners in Memphis are not lowering car insurance premiums by any great measure anytime soon, and this is in large part because too many of these “excellent drivers” are in fact lousy drivers.

This begs the question – how do you tell if you’re one of the folks who thinks they’re a great driver, but who is in fact, well on the way to causing an auto insurance claim sometime in the future? Do your fellow Memphis drivers a favor, and honestly consider the list below.

If you find yourself tending to answer yes instead of no to the questions posed, you would be well advised to make sure your auto insurance policy is in good order, and even if you don’t care enough about yourself to change your ways, do it for the rest of us as we may be the injured victim of the next pile-up caused by a bad driver in Memphis.

When you approach a stop sign and it looks as if the coast is clear, do you just slow down a bit while you coast through?
- Obey the law and come to a complete stop if you want to ensure that your great driving habits get reinforced.

Do you use a handheld cell phone, and frequently use it to talk to others while driving your vehicle?
- Instead, pull over and stop to concentrate on the call or concentrate on your driving and take the call later when you are not putting yourself and others in jeopardy by driving with this big distraction.

Do other drivers aggravate you to the extent that you yell and swear at them and make rude gestures indicating your displeasure?
- Emotional reactions while driving are an indication of a loss of control. It is often in these kinds of charged emotional states that accidents happen. Stay cool and calm, you’ll live longer.

Do you love to eat and drink with one hand while driving with the other?
- Distractions and loss of concentration on the road are one of the biggest causes of traffic accidents. For many reasons, like dropped food and spills, food and drink are a major cause of the distractions that are a cause of road accidents. Look after yourself and others by keeping your distractions to a minimum while driving – always.

Are you often sleepy and tired when you drive?
- Falling asleep at the wheel is a major cause of auto accidents. If you ever find that you are over tired while driving, immediately pull over and take a nap. Being a bit late is a much better scenario than wreckage, injury or death.

Do you love to drive fast and change lanes to get there faster?
- Those “excellent drivers” think they can handle it. Statistics clearly indicate otherwise. Of all the things you could do to make Memphis roads and highways safer, slowing down is at or near the top of the list.

Do you enjoy loud music and good conversation with friends while driving?
-    As with the other distractions, these can truly be deadly. Cars become lethal weapons when concentration is lost.

Of course, much of the above may sound like boring drivel to those “excellent drivers” we mentioned before who know it all already. But, it only takes once, just one lapse in concentration at the wrong time, and lives can be forever changed.

The simple lesson to be learned here is that driving fast while sleepy and distracted is likely to kill, injure or wreck something eventually.

But seriously, slowing down a little in Memphis, Tennessee, would do no one any harm, and if we all reduced our distractions to an absolute minimum while driving, our auto insurance rates in Memphis would likely drop because collectively we would have less accidents. We could all enjoy ourselves a little more on the roads and highways of Memphis, knowing that we care enough about ourselves and each other to drive with the “other guy in mind”.

Don’t be a bad driver in Memphis.
